From a very young age, I wondered about my grandfather's perception of reality, as he suffered from severe dementia and was unable to speak. In recent years, these questions have resurfaced while spending time with my grandmother, who now suffers from dementia herself. In an attempt to understand her, I started to explore her past as broadly as possible. I reflected on the memories she still carries, and she often considers them as the present, as well as the "post-memories" that have been passed on to me. I explored the life of a woman and her history in Slovenia through a multitude of archives that interact with photographs from the present. This work is a very intimate narrative that ranges from small to large histories which will remain scarred within my grandmother’s body and the landscapes of her ancestral home. By using my grandmother's personal stories to examine Slovenian collective history, the project rejects institutionalised narratives as ultimate truths and compares them with the fragility and I’m quite good. Every day I go for a walk. Today I was in Preddvor at the pharmacy, I went to get medication. On the way back I went to your mom. She served me nicely. Now I will walk to Zg. Bela. It’s very hard for me because I forget a lot. I’m very grateful to Tomaž and your mom.” The text was written by my grandmother. After more than 20 years of taking care of my grandfather who had Alzheimer’s disease, she is currently struggling with her own dementia. When the Swallows Don't Come Back talks about a gradual loss of a loved one, while they are still alive. I'm showing my exploration of presence and absence in the relation to the fear and uncertainty of what might come in the future. My memories don’t reach far enough I could remember him walking or talking. When I was old enough to remember, he already changed. Even though I never met the real him, I got to know him through my family. They are presented with the limitation of perceiving reality through the news outlets. For his graduation work he received a stipend from the Stiching tot Steun Foundation. He did his internship with Amsterdam based documentary photographer Henk Wildschut. His work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions across Europe. In 2025 he won Encontros da Imagem Award in Braga, Portugal. While working with photography, video, and text, he is currently developing his own long-term projects that explore the human condition and the connections between photography and memory. Within his documentary approach, he is constantly reflecting on the medium of photography and rethinking its relationship with objectivity.
